Resin Casting help? Another new question around...
Well, as you might know I make custom accessories out of a custom made sculpey that self hardens but the result is a little too flexible, so it bends and might rip apart under pressure. I tried using Epoxy, but it turned out brittle and way more fragile than expected and I couldn't paint it properly, so I thought I should give Resin a try (that and a huge discount on resin kits at a nearby store. A kit for 30 bucks, not bad I guess, it used to be 80). So I need a little help to better understand the process:
What is Resin like when fully cured? does it come out too flexible or too fragile, or is it more like plastic?
What kind of paint can I use to color a cured piece? Does PVC or nankin work? I've got lots of it ¬¬
Is it brittle after curing?
Can anyone post pics of resin cast items?
If I make a sword, or any other kind of weapon, is the handle prone to coming off the rest of the sword or bending? Can a minifig use it without a problem?
Has anyone seen the Dead deer prank? man I laughed so hard at that! ;)
Thanks!

Nope, not your fault, don't
Nope, not your fault, don't worry about that
The vendor gave me a few choices to build a starter kit and I kinda picked those up, they seemed to be the best of the lot
I don't think Alumilite's available in Brazil and, for now, ordering overseas is out of the question, Dollar is to expensive...
I was having a look at wikipedia, and that got me thinking, maybe these resin types can work just fine after all, I'll do a couple casts over the weekend and post the results in here. I really hope they do, 'cuz they were actually pretty cheap ¬¬
Epoxy resin, from what I've
Epoxy resin, from what I've seen, dries transparent. The kind of resin you want would be from Micromark or Alumilite, if you don't mind ordering overseas/land. There isn't really, from what I've seen, any different kinds of normal resin; sorry to disappoint, but Epoxy Resin/ Polyester resin probably isn't what you want here! You could paint it, and cast the normal way, but if you want casts similiar to RecluceMage's items then you want Alumilite, as that's what she used. You may have wasted your money, so I apologize if you took anything of what I said the wrong way.
I can probably deal with
I can probably deal with all these questions. First up:

Resin comes out like plastic. It is not fragile, as long as your cast is good, and is as solid as any other sort.

Actually, you can get dyes for resin so you can cast in, say, red; even metallic, if you get the mix correct. But if a paint works for LEGO plastic it should work for resin too.

It depends on your type. My kind of resin is solid as a rock after thirty minutes, thought I'd advise leaving it for about forty. But really, it depends.

Try here. It's RecluceMage's brickshelf account, one of the most famous resin re-casters of MCN. Or this picture, one of my own try-outs.
If I make a sword, or any other kind of weapon, is the handle prone to coming off the rest of the sword or bending? Can a minifig use it without a problem?
In my own experience, for one cast, yes it did. But as long as enough mold release is applied to the mold and piece, it should work with no problems.

Nope.
Hope that helped!

Alright, Thanks! Took me
Alright, Thanks! Took me awhile to answer because I'm having some browser problems with message boards, but I've ordered a starter kit and a few extras to get started, I've got my master models ready and can't wait to try it out!
I feel really optimistic about resin casting now!
EDIT: New question
Well, I've finally received my resin kit, but now I've got another question:
I ordered Polyester Resin, Rigid Epoxy Resin, Semi-Rigid Epoxy Resin and Flexible Epoxy Resin, my question is, which one of these would be best to make lego accessories in general? Is there a better type of Resin to cast helmets, hairpieces, swords, shields, etc? Or does the type of resin depend on the type of item to be cast?
